No Matter What, They Are Not Pants!

Posted by Danielle Ciavarro under Trends

The trend of wearing Tights and Leggings has been around for a while now. They are a great accessory that make outfits fun and comfortable while still being fashionable. They come in so many different colours and prints now a days, that you have an unlimited amount of choices.

The only problem I find these days, is that people are getting lazy and are using tights/leggings as an excuse.

In certain jobs, where wearing jeans is not permitted, people have started to take the lazy route, and instead of putting together an outfit centered around a ‘career’ outfit, like dress pants or a skirt, they just stick on a pair of leggings and some random top and go. That is not the point of the ‘No Jeans’ rule people, the point is to get you to dress appropriately for your job, to dress like you have a career. There is nothing more unprofessional then walking into a business where someone is wearing a pair of leggings as pants, with a dressy top. No one needs to see your Camel toe at work!

This brings me to my biggest pet peeve.

And not just tights, leggings for that matter as well. While Leggings and Tights are two different things, I don’t think either of them should be worn as pants.

What does that mean exactly?

You must ALWAYS wear a top that covers your butt and crotch, no matter what. No one needs to stop and realized that there is nothing but a very thin piece of fabric between your backside/frontside and the rest of the world. Why not put another piece of fabric in the way, just for extra protection.

Above are two examples that, in my books, are never allowed to happen.

Thankfully, Skinny Jeans, and Denim Leggings are thick enough  to allow for the right amount of ‘backseat’ and Camel Toe protection against the world, but other then that, everything should be worn with a long or over sized shirt that covers you up!

Think about this the next time you get dressed!

Tights & Shorts

So we have all seen this trend at some point in our lives. I’ve seen quite a few people lately pulling off the whole ‘Tights & Shorts’ phenomenon, and every time I see it I get inspired and want to try it, but it’s a matter of pairing the right shorts, with the right tights, with the right shoes, and there is something very daunting about that.

Finally I got my butt in gear and decided to just try it out!

I bought these great shorts last September in LA from a store called Heritage 1981, which is owned by the same company as Forever 21. I’ve often found it hard buying shorts because a lot of them never fit me properly and I always have trouble finding the right length for my proportions. I finally found these beauties and fell in love.

I paired the shorts with some basic black tights I bought at Plum and my Faux Fryes.

On top I wore a grey t-shirt from Espirt and a purple ribbed waist cardigan from Kersh, paired with a fun multi coloured scarf from Le Chateau.

I thought it turned out pretty good. I want to buy some printed tights and try that next time as well.

I quite like the idea of tights and shorts now that I’ve tried it out. I think paired with the right top and shoes it can be a fun and stylish use of shorts in the winter months!

Trends: Denim Leggings

Posted by Danielle Ciavarro under Trends

My Moms friend passed this article along to me from The Province. You can find it originally posted here.

For those who love the sleek look of a skinny jean but can’t stand the leg-sucking compression, impossibly small openings at the ankles or rigid denim digging into skin, the skinny jean/legging hybrid known as jeggings could be a worthy alternative.

“The skinny silhouette is so prevalent in fashion right now,” J Brand creative director Susie Crippen says. “The big sweaters, high boots and skinny jeans are all a part of the silhouette of the season.”

Vancouver-based label Mavi introduced its “Serena” jeggings in September and they’re now one of Mavi’s best-selling styles .“It makes up 40 per cent of our ladies’ denim sales,” says Cora Mau, Mavi’s public relations manager.

Both Mavi and J Brand have jeggings in their spring lines, and Crippen is certain the trend will move forward into next fall.

Who’s buying them? The same customer who has been wearing the skinny jean for years: celebs such as Jessica Simpson, Ashley Tisdale and Rashida Jones, and women who are comfortable with the silhouette of skinny bottom and more voluminous top.

“Emily Haines from Metric, Colbie Caillat and Jully Black are just a few of the big names who wear Mavi’s jeggings,” says Mau.

For those who have shunned skinny jeans because they’d rather not squeeze themselves into what feels like sausage casing, trying out denim leggings can be a scary experience. But the jagging fabric is much more forgiving. If you are willing to experiment, Crippen has advice on how to make the look work. “Make sure your shirt comes down to your mid-thigh, and if you feel squat in the look, wear heels or ankle boots,” she says.

One main difference between denim leggings and regular leggings is the jean-like waistband with a proper button closure and zipper, which gives the top more structure and adds flexibility to the way they can be worn. “They have the look of a pair of jeans so you can wear cropped jackets and short tops without feeling bare like you would if you were wearing leggings,” says Mau.

“It’s a very Jean Seberg, late ‘60s vibe,” Crippen says. “I just watched Bye Bye Birdie, and everyone is wearing little cropped leggings and short shirts . . . It’s not like it’s a new silhouette.”

Have I not been expressing my love for Mavi’s Serena Denim Leggings for what seems like an eternity now! I just hate when people call them jeggings, but that is a personal thing. Take this as your opportunity to go check them out and buy a pair! You will love them!!!
